Hotel Coconut Lagoon Resort, Kumarakom (*****star)Marooned in the beautiful Vembanad Lake, Coconut Lagoon glows like a jewel in the crown. This uniquely designed "heritage resort" is a re-creation of a traditional Keralan village and each of the wooden house is an original Kerala tharavadu which has been brought from all over the state and carefully re-assembled by skilled craftsmen. The coconut lagoon can only be reached by boat - a ferry leaves from one of the several mainland embarkation points at scheduled times throughout the day.
Accommodation:
Old, traditional Kerala houses have been brought from all over the state and carefully re-assembled by master craftsmen. The resort offers three types of accommodation:
HERITAGE BUNGALOWS - independent villas.
HERITAGE MANSIONS - duplex rooms with the living downstairs and bed on the 1st floor.
THE PRIVATE POOL VILLA - which has a separate sitting area and a private swimming pool.
All rooms are air-conditioned. One distinct feature of the Kerala houses is the bathrooms, which besides having all the "mod cons" have an open courtyard, complete with banana tree looking up into the open skies
Dining:
Besides a buffet restaurant, the bar serves tall drinks all day and a Fish Restaurant opens every evening serving only the fresh catch of the day. Cited in Arundhati Roy's Booker Prize winning bestseller, "The God of Small Things," the restaurant at Coconut Lagoon is renowned as much for its superb Keralan cuisine (Vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike) as for its authentic setting, and is housed in one of the resort's most impressive tharawads. Known as an ettukettu, the building incorporates two atrium-like courtyards under an expansive tile roof supported by dozens of slim columns, a design that enables the space within to benefit from the slightest breeze. The restaurant is the oldest structure at coconut lagoon, and it, too, formerly belonged to a prominent Malayali family living in a nearby village
Recreation:
There is a large swimming pool with children's section and sunbathing area, a small shop and Ayurvedic centre.
